research
I did more research into Andy Warhol and his later life and artistic career. Looking specifically as well at his cooperation with Basquiat. A collaboration which I previously had no idea had existed. if I had to interpret the work, which seems to have been very important to Warhol since it ended his 20 year retirement from painting. it may be commentary about how black culture exists in America. or more specifically how it is a counteractive force against it in a lot of ways. It's Warhol drawing corporate logos. then Basquiat painting over it in primal, privative or infantile if you prefer: folk art. With Andy then putting more corporate logos over it. like an endless battle. constant marches of counter cultures. People finding something human and authentic, then corporations trying to sell it back to people. The Basquiat paintings are a defacement, but itself is later covered in logos and becomes a work to be sold. then In a meta sense, the painting itself is sold. Which is god knows how many layers of meta. I think it also says, there is no real change. It's all accommodated for, everything rebellious will become a product and lose it's soul. But that then in of itself will bring about a new counter culture. a constant cycle of life and death.
Life and death seemingly being a recurring element in Warhol's work, especially since his assassination attempt at the hands of Valerie Solanas.
Later for this poster task, I'd revisit Andy Warhol's Disaster pieces as a visual representation of New York.

Sidney Nolan was an artist I looked into for a brief period of time since his work was in the University's library. I understand that he was illustrating Australian folktales and mythology. Which got me thinking about my own mythology and how that's very important to me, So I'd listen to the entirety of the Mabinogion which is a book compiled in the 1840s about welsh folklore. Many of these stories dating as far back to 900AD.
All of these works are from some books which I've borrowed from my grandfather from back home, all detailed illustrations of these stories from our past and culture I would do some work inspired by this. It also gave me the idea to go more for this localist idea. Since I'm making posters for these bands going to these concerts, why not tie-in some of the non contemporary art from these local cultures into the posters.
I went to an art gallery in wales, I went here to hope to pick up some ideas relating inspiration, theme and also as a touch stone. being away from wales and reading about my culture and about far more ancient mysteries and anomalies, unexplained by the modern science or archeology relating to Gobekli Tepe in turkey, Stone henge and the Great pyramids. I've gotten a lot into metaphysics and the idea that things are told through generations for thousands of years. which there are some examples of in Australia among aboriginals. And so I came back to theology and my culture to try to understand the past and therefore myself, and how I fit into history.
Though I didn't find anything transcendent, I found interesting techniques with watered down oil paint and someone who'd been very influenced by van Gogh, making romanticized paintings of the welsh landscape.

Stuart Mcharrie is an artist I discovered recently on Instagram. I like how still, lifeless and grey his depictions of Britain are. I prefer that, as opposed to a romanticized Britain. it feels more honest, and it points out these flaws about us. It feels like a liminal, empty world in his paintings. Spiritually dead and silent. Nothing to say but static.
I looked at Soviet posers for some inspiration for the design of the band's abbreviation style. since the band's abbreviated name was CCCC which i thought sounded similar to CCCP.
I looked at posters from modern day and the 20th century. Looed at their history into how they were made and how they often stole their images from elsewhere and had a very rough and cheap aesthetic especially around certain scenes such as punk, grunge and these more sort of underground emerging genres at the time.
I went on a website that automatically generates these album cover designs. Just to give me ideas, and to challenge myself to try and take some forms and adapt them into posters.
