hieronymous Bosch

Picture
He was born in 1450 in the town of Hertogenbosch. In the Province of Brabant, now a municipality of the Southern Netherlands.
His father, older brothers, uncles and grandfather were also artists, who all together left a wealth of work for Bosch. Passing down their knowledge to make him a master of the family art tradition.
when he was 13 years old he witnessed a devastating fire destroy much of his town.
Which likely Influenced his later hellish landscapes.

He is perhaps best known for his Triptych masterpiece: 'The Garden Of Earthly Delights'.

What is a Triptych?
Triptychs were typically large religious paintings you could open up on Sundays to reveal a beautiful inner painting.

This is how the outside of the doors looked like.
and below is the painting when it is opened up.

revealing a bright mysterious scene depicting symbolic scenes of the garden of Eden, degeneration and corruption of man until paradise becomes hell.
Picture
Picture
throughout the whole painting are dozens upon dozens of little scenes which all tell their own part of the story, which have taught me about how these people saw the world. where spirituality was more important than the material, where art was visual poetry. It's beyond beautiful in it's depictions and it's thinking.

Just to give an idea of the size of these things.
